CH-46 Simulation
This is a prototype attempt to make a reasonable CH-46 Helicopter
simulation. This was my first completed model using AAF. It does
have its faults but it's a first. A friend of mine, "Skunk Works",
does the aeros for my models and was the author of all the planes
that I have uploaded to this forum. FS 4.0 was never designed to
do helos so there are some shortcomings, but we think you may find
it interesting.
This was done by modifying the flight model of the Lear. We
originally built a version using the experimental prop aircraft as
the flight model, but the Lear seems to work better.
Please experiment with this, and make any changes that you think
are necessary. We are always looking for constructive input.
This aircraft takes a little getting used to. For takeoff, give it
full power, and after it leaps off the deck, quickly reduce power.
It takes a lot of forward stick and or trim to keep level, but once
you are off it flies very nicely.
For landings, pick your spot about 3 miles out, and bring the power
back until you are at 40 - 60 knots. Ideally, you should be about
200 feet AGL and 40 - 60 knots for the last mile. Then play with
the power, to maintain 40 knots. As you settle in for landing,
pull back on the stick about 50 - 100 feet up. The aircraft should
drop straight down, level attitude, and land with no forward
velocity.
We have included two demos. HELODEMO.DEM takes off from a carrier,
makes some steep turns, and returns for landing, right on the edge
of the carrier. Then it takes off again, and comes around for
another landing. VERTFLT.DEM shows one of the unique aspects of
this model; from a dead start, you can slew it up several hundred
feet, and it will drop straight down in a level attitude. With a
little power, it can almost hover - if you put in a 10 knot
headwind, it can hover!
To see these demos, first call up the mode "CH-46 on deck".
This will set the proper initial conditions. For some reason, when
in the demo mode, the stall warning is constantly on, so you might
want to hit "Q" to cut out the noise prior to starting the demo.
Let us know what you think.
